Description

Acanthophyllia, commonly known as the Doughnut Coral or Meat Coral, is a highly sought-after large polyp stony (LPS) coral in the reef aquarium. Prized for its large, fleshy polyp and dazzling array of colors, it makes a stunning centerpiece in any well-maintained tank.

Acanthophyllia are generally considered to be a relatively easy-to-care-for LPS coral, making them a good choice for both beginner and experienced hobbyists. However, some sources suggest they can be sensitive, particularly to unstable water parameters.

Acanthophyllia thrive in low to moderate lighting, with a recommended PAR range of 50 to 120. Excessive lighting can cause the coral to bleach, so it's often best to place them in a shaded area of the tank.

Low to medium, indirect water flow is ideal. Strong, direct flow can be problematic, as it can push the coral's fleshy tissue against its sharp skeleton, causing punctures and damage. Variable flow patterns are highly recommended.

Acanthophyllia are ferocious and dramatic feeders. While they rely on their symbiotic zooxanthellae for some energy, they benefit greatly from the addition of meaty foods. They will practically turn themselves inside out to accept food. They can be spot-fed a variety of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, and other chopped seafood.
