Torch coral is a highly popular large polyp stony (LPS) coral in the saltwater aquarium hobby. It is a stunning centerpiece for many reef tanks, admired for its long, flowing tentacles and vibrant colors.
Torch corals are considered highly aggressive due to their long "sweeper" tentacles. These tentacles, tipped with potent stinging cells (cnidocytes), can extend far beyond the coral's main body, stinging and damaging or even killing neighboring corals.
Torch corals are generally considered a good choice for both beginner and experienced hobbyists due to their hardiness and ability to tolerate a range of conditions. However, stable water parameters are crucial for their health and growth.
Torch corals thrive in low to moderate lighting. A PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) range of 50-150 is often recommended. Too much light can cause the coral to bleach, so it's generally safer to provide less light rather than more.
Moderate, indirect, and turbulent water flow is ideal. This helps keep the coral clean and provides the swaying motion that makes them so attractive. Strong, direct flow can damage the coral's delicate tissue, causing it to tear from the skeleton.
Proper placement is critical due to their aggressive nature. They should be given plenty of space—at least 6 inches or more—from other corals to prevent them from stinging their neighbors. They can be placed on a rock or on the sand bed, as long as they are anchored securely and have enough room to sway without touching other corals or the glass
